As you note, it may be read on a number of levels. In one respect it can be seen as a 'magical mystery tour', with the events and scenes being accepted at their face value - very much as in a dream.
On another level, however, the events can be seen in an almost allegorical manner, a secular progress in the same vein as the 'Stations of the Cross'. One has to suffer through each episode in order to liberate oneself enough to understand the next.

Jae, the protagonist in Jackie Griffiths' novel, is in a sense an 'Everywoman', although her sense of confusion and emptiness is, perhaps, a universal experience.

I am compelled to read this quirky and enjoyable book again, thanks to your most insightful review. Moreover, I would urge everyone to read it. Nothing quite like it has come my way, and it is a most stimulating and thought-provoking read. I would not go so far as to say that it could change your life. Equally, I would hesitate to say that it could not.

Malcolm Macdonaldnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264965526853735683.post-16815483319046068582016-02-27T12:21:42.341+00:002016-02-27T12:21:42.341+00:00I think a lot of us, myself included have had per...I think a lot of us, myself included have had periods just like that, sounds like a book to be read.Libbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08464271602344677198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264965526853735683.post-23086272711724627242016-02-27T11:19:45.863+00:002016-02-27T11:19:45.863+00:00This is going on my TBR without delay.
