I seem to remember doing a very long and drawn out project about the Wars of the Roses when I was in primary school. Having read this review I can see that it was simply the teacher who didn't bring the story to life. There's certainly a lot to get your teeth into and, as you say, depicting journeys at this time and all the gritty detail is a challenge to any author. It sounds as though S M Harrison has done rather a good job! Possibly it ranks alongside such epics as Pillars of the Earth and, if so, is definitely worth a read.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12445629159912795832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264965526853735683.post-37748741947388334942013-10-24T17:45:07.889+01:002013-10-24T17:45:07.889+01:00I enjoyed the review immensely. The marriage, infighting and split between the cousins, as well as the shifting loyalties of Clarence and Warwick are historical. See Su Harrison's comments below for more about the fictional elements of this superb novel.

I'm sure there are indeed other books, even apart from the one you reference, that feature women alone at night in medieval forests; as mentioned, however, this is only one of two I personally have read. I certainly am open to recommendations and shall have to pursue the title you speak of. Interestingly the other novel with such a scene is also presented feasibly, yet totally different to Harrison's treatment of Elizabeth's journeying. I am intrigued to see how this third author presents her character's travels.

I believe you will find this book quite satisfactory--fluid and descriptive, it not only follows historical events but also presents Warwick away from the typeset and affords an opportunity for readers to see him, better or worse, for the individual he was. Enjoy!
Lisl Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00927191956944759219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264965526853735683.post-26791871011227827732013-10-23T22:41:09.840+01:002013-10-23T22:41:09.840+01:00A very interesting book, would love to win a copy ...A very interesting book, would love to win a copy :)Ingibjorg Agustsdottirhttp://blog.hi.is/ingibjoanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264965526853735683.post-24700710226768582122013-10-23T21:59:43.907+01:002013-10-23T21:59:43.907+01:00This is one I might have overlooked and it is on a...This is one I might have overlooked and it is on a topic I devour. I wanted to understand what made this Knight of the Garter forsake the cause for which he had done so much and ally himself with those he had grown to hate and I wanted the reader to see this web of conspiracy and treason from his point of view and understand the emotional as well as the physical cost of that choice. There was no historical character who could accompany him on this journey, so I created the fictional Elizabeth Hardacre. Whether to use fictional characters or not is often a difficult choice for a writer of Historical Fiction, but in my case it was Elizabeth who came first. Some might find her daring unbelievable in a fifteenth-century context, but the use of a female spy to take letters to the Duke of Clarence from King Edward is true, though we do not know her identity. To Defy a King has a night ride for the heroine and she was alone. I enjoyed reading this review very much. I just need to understand the time line and whether the story is true or invented.
