Jean Fullerton has a light touch for cleverly getting the history across but an intense one in conveying the period and her characters. Her imagery is good - Millie's freezing fingers on her bicycle handlebars, the appalling living conditions of the small boy. I would have preferred a little stronger plot with a heightened crisis, but that's a personal preference.<br /><br />When CNM was published she wrote a fascinating post about "Ten things that have changed since Nurse Millie Sullivan’s day" - near enough to appear familiar, but far enough away to make us smile in relief. http://alison-morton.com/blog/2013/05/25/call-jean-fullerton/.
